Student researchers from Cagayan State University Aparri Campus won top spots in the recently concluded 2024 University Search for Best Undergraduate Thesis, held at CSU Andrews on June 20, 2024.
Ms. Donica Lorenzo, from the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS) was adjudged First Place in Experimental Category after presenting her group’s thesis titled “Potential Antibacterial Use of Selected Seaweed Species Against Aquaculture Pathogens.” The BSF Fisheries graduating Lorenzo worked with Mr. Joefrey Usigan and Mr. R Jay Tuppil to finish the study, under the advisership of Dr. Emma Ballad and Ma’am Glycinea M. de Peralta.
Meanwhile, Mr. Christian A. Elaurza from the College of Information and Computing Sciences (CICS) clinched 2nd place in Technological Category with his team’s study titled, “Safe Waters: Enhancing Security and Safety for Aparri, Cagayan Fishermen through Web-based GPS Vessel Tracking”. He worked with Ms. Maridee Basilio, and Mr. Marc Andrew Arce in accomplishing the study and was mentored by Prof. Dr. Billy S. Javier.
For the Social Science category, Mr. Mark Joseph Tintero placed third after presenting his study on “AI as a system: Quality of QuillBot-assisted written discourse of Teacher Education Students”, who worked together with Mr. Bryan Butial, Mr. Jovanie Bravo, Ms. Marla Malazzab, Ms. Amie Columna, Ms. Wendylyn Villon, and Ms. Jessica Gaspar for the accomplishment of the study under the mentorship of Dr. Mark John M. Tamanu.
Meanwhile, the student-researchers received certificates and cash prizes amounting to P5,000 for the first place, P3,000 for the second place, and P2,000 for the third place, respectively. The teams were adjudged winners in the Campus Search for Best Undergraduate Thesis besting other contenders from the 7 colleges.
